Breaking the Silence: staying at home in an emigrant society. In the 1950s, Ireland was experiencing the highest levels of emigration of the twentieth century. Yet, we know little about the impact of emigration on those who stayed. This project (which was part funded by the Higher Education Authority, Ireland) set out to capture living memories of Irish life in the 1950s by interviewing those who stayed in Ireland in a decade when so many were leaving.
